Lord shiva is one of the most worshipped god in Nepal.The lord Shiva Temple's tour has been designed to cater to the need of those who wish to make a religious tour around valley.This tour include 12 most famous Shiva Temples around valley.It is believed that one should worship god  with empty stomach  and should take bath early in the morning to get body pure.

Shiva is one of the principal deities of Hinduism. He is the Supreme Being within shaivism one of the major traditions within contemporary Hinduism. Shiva is the "destroyer and transformer" within the Trimutri, the Hindu trinity that includes Brahma and Vishnu .In Shaivism tradition, Shiva is the Supreme being who creates, protects and transforms the universe.He is regarded as the hero of Hinduism.

Some of the famous festivals celebrated in Nepal of lord Shiva are:

1.      Teej

Teej is a very popular festival in the northern part of the country and is basically a festival for ladies. The festival is dedicated to the re-union of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati and thus it is celebrated by ladies for the long and healthy life as well as the well-being of their husbands and children. 

2.      Shrawan Maas

The fifth month of the Hindu calendar and one of the most auspicious months is Shrawan. This month is particularly dedicated to Lord Shiva and many people observe a fast on Monday, Shrawan Somvar (as Monday is the day of Lord Shiva) during this month. During the course of the month the star shrawan rules the night sky and hence the month is named shrawan. In this holy month the Shiva temples are filled with devotees who offer prayers to Lord Shiva. People offer Bel leaves, white flowers and fruits to the Shivalinga and the akhandadeep (24 hours lamp) is constantly lit in the temples. 

3.Shivaratri

Shiva Ratri is the night of Lord Shiva when He himself was created by His own Divine Grace and Hindus all
over the world celebrate this day with a lot of zeal and enthusiasm. Shiva Ratri literally means ‘ the night consecrated to Shiva’. This auspicious festival falls on the fourteenth day of the waning moon in the month of Falgun, (February – March in the Gregorian calendar).

Full Day visit of Lord Shiva temples around Kathmandu

Drive to Patan Durbar Square and worship in Khumbeshwor Temple:(Khumbeshwor Temple is situated next to Patan Durbar Square,Khumbeshwor is one of the oldest and tallest temple here.The history of this temple goes back to twelveth century when few gentleman of the city on their piligrimage to Gosainkunda(A holy ice-lake in north western side of Kathmandu)forgot their jug to be found on a stone tap next to the temple.)

Santaneshwor Mahadev Temple:A wounderful drive of 30 minutes from Patan Durbar square would take us to a very beautiful suburb......full of natural beauty.Situated on top of a small hill is the holy temple of Shiva Santaneshwor.People come here with the hope of getting children(santan).

Drive to Gokarneshwor Temple(24km-1.5hrs from Santaneshwor mahadev Temple):Gokerneshwor Mahadev temple is one of historic land mark as well as popular place for Shorah Shradha (a religious event of Hindu).People visit  this temple to take bath and make offerings in honor of their father's living or dead,on a day called Gokarna Aunsi in late August to early September.

Day 3

Full day visit of lord Shiva Temples around Bhaktapur and Changunarayan

Drive to Dattatraya Mahadev Temple,Bhaktapur(17km-45min from Thamel) (Dattatraya temple was originally built in 1427 and dedicated to supreme gods of Hinduism:Bramha-the creator Vishnu-the protector and Shiva-the destroyer,believed in using the timber from a single tree.)

Drive to Jyotirlingeshwor Mahadev Temple:(6km-20min from Dattatraya mahadev Temple):Jyotirlingeshwor is situated in Duwakot  which is a suburb 4km next to Bhaktapur.A mixed population of people all around Nepal and local Brahmin Chettri’s live here. As per Hindu epics, when dead body of Satidevi (first wife of Shiva) was carried by Shiva, it started slowly rotting down and dropped. Left knee fell down at this village and temple of Devi  Duwakot was built and temple of Jyotirlingeswor was constructed here.

Drive to Changunarayan:The oldest temple of our country Changu Narayan is situated on top of a hill 7km North to Bhaktapur. It is temple of lord Vishnu.

Kileswar Mahadev Temple:Kileswar temple situated next to Changu Narayan is a temple of lord Shiva whose history goes back to time of Ravan.When all the gods were defeated by Ravan; they flew to the hill of Changu Narayan.Ravan started to rock the hill and gods were afraid and started worshipping Shiva. The ancient temple of Changu Narayan is located in a hill that is also known as Changu or Dolagiri.The temple was surrounded by forest with champak tree and a small village, known as Changu village.

Drive to Pilot Baba Ashram:On top of the hill above Surya Binayak is a newly built temple of lord Shiva pilot baba dham.Built by modern day Hindu devotee Mr.Kapil Singh also called pilot baba because of his profession in a modern design marble temple on Sikhara style. It is located on a hill called Ghyampe dada a perfect place to view Kathmandu valley city, hills and Himalaya.

Day 4

Full day visit of Doleshwor,Ashapuri,kailashnath Mahadev and Indreshwor Mahadev Temple

Drive to Doleshwor:It is an old temple which became popular worldwide in last few years when this temple was declared the head of Kedarnath (A very popular Hindu temple in Uttarakhanda, India).

Drive to Kailashnath Mahadev:The world's tallest statue(143ft) of Lord Shiva is built quite recently by Nepali businessman.On the top of a hill named Sanga,which is the borderline of kathmandu valley and one of the good view point of city.

Drive to Ashapuri:After 6km drive from temple kailashnath will take us to another popular temple of Shiva called Ashapuri Mahadev.Its a temple popular among piligrimage of lord Shiva for fulfilling hopes.

Drive to Indreshwor Mahadev Temple(16km-45min from Aashapuri):Between two rives in an Isthmus  among a vey old square lies a 3 story temple of Indreshwor Mahadev.This  temple was built in 1294 and later rebuilt in 15th century.The Shiva Linga in this temple is beleived to be built by Lord Shiva himself.

Full day visit of Kusheshwor Mahadev & return back to kathmandu

Kusheshwor Mahadev Temple:After a 50km scenic drive off  from the hill station of Dhulikhel we will reach the beautiful and popular temple of Shiva called Kusheshwor.According to the Hindu holy books kusheshwor is one among 64 Aadhi Linga situated around the world.


Late afternoon drive back to Kathmandu.(85km-3hrs from Kusheshwor)

Day 6

Full day visit of koteshwor Mahadev ,Pashupatinath and evening Aarati

Visit koteshwor Mahadev and worship.

Drive to Pashupatinath Temple:The greatest and most significant Hindu temple in the world and holiest Lord Shiva Shrine entire South Asia is situated on eastern side in core of Kathmandu and is next to International Airport.Visited by millions,Pashupati is one of the dream destination of Hindus.Cremation and a lot of Hindu rituals are always happening round the clock in this premise story.

(As per Hindu holy book, lord Shiva once roamed around Mrigasthali forest (next to the present day pashupati) as Antelope.Later gods discovered him and caught his anteler. Lord Shiva came to his form but the antler broke. The broken antler was worshipped as Shiva linga.During 4th century AD there was a farmer living nearby Pashupati. His cows used to go to forest for grazing. One of his best cow stopped giving milk. He followed the cow and found that it was shedding milk in a spot. He dug the spot and found the Shivalinga with special light emitting out of it. It is believed that was the same antler Shivalinga.Later ,temple of Pashupati was built here)

Watch Aarati at evening time in Pashupatinath ,the evening rituals includes a band singing hymns in praise of god, playing of classical instruments, chanting of Vedic mantras, ringing of bells, burning of incense, and lighting of oil lamps, keep the people spellbound throughout. The ritual makes the evening environment dazzling. The Aarati is performed at 6 pm every day. The attendees experience a blissful moment.
